Useful information

Province : Libournais and Saint Émilion

  • English
    • Guîtres is a charming town in Gironde, located in the heart of Libournais. It is renowned for its historical heritage and its gentle way of life.

      A bit of history

Guîtres owes its original name to its privileged geographical position at the confluence of the Isle, the Lary and the Galostre.

The town developed around a Benedictine abbey, whose Notre-Dame abbey is today a major historical monument not to be missed during a stay in Gironde.

The latter welcomed many personalities, including Henri IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV.

What to see and do in Guîtres?

      Visit the Notre-Dame abbey

This jewel of Romanesque architecture is a must-see. Its cloister, sculpted capitals and grand organ will transport you through the centuries in the blink of an eye.

      See the Henri IV well

This 16th century well is another testimony to Guîtres' rich past.

Strolling through the streets of the historic center

Take the time to lose yourself in the cobbled streets of Guîtres to admire the half-timbered houses and perhaps come across hidden treasures.

      Go back to the past

If you are passing through Guîtres, you absolutely must go to the train station and the railway museum. The tourist train uses this old track and takes visitors on a journey through time thanks to its steam locomotives.

Stroll along the banks of the Isle

Fancy a breath of fresh air? A break is essential near the river to relax and/or have a good time alone or with others.

      Explore the vineyards

Guîtres is located in the heart of a renowned wine region. Don't hesitate to visit the surrounding estates and taste (in moderation!) the local wines.
