The Citadel of Blaye is an emblematic site because it is part of the "military lock" designed by Vauban to protect the mouth of the Gironde. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel has several areas to visit. The exterior is freely accessible. The buildings house a museum of history and archaeology. You can also visit the underground passages, which lead to the port. Don't miss a walk around the site to see the confluence of the Dordogne and Gironde rivers nearby.
