The Gironde estuary comes from the meeting between the rivers Dordogne and Garonne at the level of Bec d'Ambès , and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a perpetual fight between these two forces of nature. This regular show makes it a must-see tourist site in Gironde. But this place has many other secrets to reveal to us. It is an atypical environment, with its own ecosystem. The brackish waters, that is to say, semi-sweet and semi-salty, which flow from it, are home to original flora and fauna. You will make very interesting natural visits there.
The islands of the Gironde estuary evolve according to the currents. In fact, each island has its specificity. Bouchaud Island , also called “New Island” is a Nature Reserve , classified as “Sensitive Natural Area”. The island Patiras has for point of interest its lighthouse and its vineyards. Margaux Island is a private wine estate. Île Pâté is a defensive island, with its Fort Pâté, built by Vauban. Macau Island is the oldest in the estuary. It is inhabited exclusively by free-roaming horses! The Green, North and Cazeau Islands form a large spit of land, with Macau Island. It is an unusual island network, visible during the ferry crossing.
